The Most Important Step in a Skincare Routine

Can you guess the most important step in a skincare routine?… Let us tell you.

There can be many steps that make up a good & enjoyable skincare routine and in a market filled with so many lotions, potions, acids and emollients it can be hard to navigate which are the most important and which of all these things we actually need.

Which leads us on to what, in our opinion, is the number one golden step in a great skincare routine…

Cleansing. Simply put, it’s removing daily dirt, pollution, SPF (because you should be wearing it!) and all other external stressors. Yep, cleaning or washing our faces is paramount to healthy, glowing skin.

Now, we know that doing this every single night can sometimes seem laborious, but we think by the time you’ve read our reasons for taking cleansing as a serious business, you’ll be inspired and full of motivation to get that beautiful face of yours, clean, fresh and ready for anything.

So, let’s get into the reasons why cleansing is our golden skincare routine step…

Promotes Healthy Skin

Well firstly, it promotes healthier looking and feeling skin. Our skin cells go through their life cycle of birth to death, moving to the top of our skin layers approximately every 30 days. As we get older, this process takes longer. By cleansing (and exfoliating) we are promoting more regular cell turn over which in turn leads to new and rejuvenated skin. By skipping our daily cleansing, our skin can look dry and dull.

Prepares Skin for Next Steps

Fundamentally, there is no point to applying lovely products like an organic facial oil if our skin isn’t clean first.. if we can use an analogy, it’d be like eating off a dirty plate! The products just won’t absorb if they have dirt or dead skin cells to get through. This makes facial cleansing easily the most important step in a skincare routine.

Umm, it Cleans Skin

This one might seem as though it could go without saying but.. cleansing – it keeps our skin clean! If we allow a build up of dirt, pollution and make up as well as bacteria and germs, then our skin is more prone to breakouts, being dry, looking lacklustre and showing the signs of premature aging.

Cleansing prevents breakouts. Keeping skin clear allows sebum to reach the surface where it stops our natural moisture from leaving and stops bacteria entering the follicle which is where acne can occur.

Skin Hydration

Cleansing will boost the hydration of your skin, and hydration is so important, without it skin is dry, dull and can get prematurely wrinkled.

Skin Barrier

By cleansing away the environmental stressors that can damage our skin, we help our skin barrier function properly, which will clear the skin so that sebum can make its way up to the surface. Without cleansing we allow those stressors to set on skin, increasing the potential for skin barrier damage. Skin barrier health is critical to great looking skin, so this is again why cleansing is arguably the most important step in a skincare routine.

So then, by now we’re hoping you’re convinced you should put some TLC into daily cleansing, but when and how should we be doing it?

Morning Facial Cleanse

Let’s talk morning routine. So in the AM, a gentle cleanse like a facial wash, massage with a konjac sponge or even just a wipe with a warm, damp flannel should be enough. This is more just a refresher for taking off anything you’ve built up during the night, from your pillow, touching your face etc. This comes after your full cleanse from the night before….

Evening Facial Cleanse

Night time. In the evening it’s time for your full, proper cleanse. You’re working to remove the days dirt and grime, any makeup you’re wearing, SPF, (still should be wearing it!) and all this is done thoroughly before we apply any of the next steps in our skincare routine; toner / mist, serum, facial oils, moisturiser. If you’ve been outside, have worn SPF, make up etc then a Double Cleanse is recommended, otherwise, one cleanse will probably do.

Okay, I’m on board I here you say.. so what products should I be using?

Lets start with what you shouldn’t be using. In a word.. soap! Never, ever use a normal soap bar (unless it is specifically designed for your face) when cleansing your face. This is because the pH levels in soap are way too high and strip your facial skin of all of it’s natural oils, ruining the skins protective barrier. This is always a no no. The skin on our face is acidic, and needs to stay that way to perform at its best.
