Gua sha and face rollers have become some of the most sought-after beauty tools in recent years, and we love them! But these tools aren’t just trendy; they’re rooted in centuries-old Chinese practices and offer a variety of benefits for both skin and overall wellbeing.
At Blue Labelle, I’m thrilled to introduce our newly expanded range of facial tools, including jade and rose quartz options designed to enhance your skincare ritual and promote a healthy glow. Here in part 1, I’ll share a bit about the history and benefits of these tools, how to use each, and some tips to help you decide which is right for you. Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll share videos demonstrating each tool and technique!
A Brief History: The Origins of Gua Sha in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
The origins of gua sha can be traced back thousands of years to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it was used as a healing technique to alleviate muscle tension, stimulate blood flow, and encourage natural healing. The term “gua sha” comes from two Chinese characters: “gua” (刮) meaning “to scrape” and “sha” (痧), which refers to the red or purple marks that may appear on the skin after scraping. Together, “gua sha” translates to “scraping sand” or “scraping redness,” describing the process of using a tool to apply pressure and encourage circulation beneath the skin’s surface.
In body gua sha, this technique is used more intensively and often results in these temporary marks, which are seen as a sign of stagnant energy release. Facial gua sha, however, uses much lighter pressure, making it suitable for delicate facial skin without causing redness. Both techniques aim to stimulate the flow of qi (life energy) to revitalise the body, soothe tension, and encourage a radiant complexion.

Choosing Your Tool: Gua Sha or Face Roller?
Choosing the right tool can make all the difference in your skincare ritual. Here’s a look at the options in our collection to help you decide:
- Jade Gua Sha Mushroom (£8 or two for £14): With its unique mushroom shape, this tool can be used for smaller areas, making it ideal for around the eyes, mouth, and areas where you want to target puffiness. The cooling jade stone is a traditional favourite in TCM, symbolising purity and tranquillity.
- Rose Quartz Gua Sha (£10): Rose quartz is known as the stone of love and has a soothing, cooling quality. This classic gua sha shape is perfect for facial contouring and lymphatic drainage, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and energised.
- Jade Gua Sha Comb (£19): This dual-purpose tool is designed for both the face and scalp. Ideal for gentle facial massages as well as invigorating scalp massages with its comb-like edge, encouraging circulation and soothing tension in the scalp which leads to less tension through the whole body.
- Mini Jade Roller (£6.75): Compact and easy to use, the mini jade roller is perfect for on-the-go and great for targeting smaller areas of the face, like under the eyes or along the jawline.
- Dual-Ended Rose Quartz Roller (£21): With both a larger and smaller end, this roller offers versatility for different areas of the face. Rose quartz is naturally calming, helping to soothe the skin and reduce visible signs of stress.
How to Use Each Tool
- Using a Gua Sha Tool
Gua sha tools are best used with a facial oil to help the stone glide across the skin, reducing friction and enhancing your massage experience. After cleansing and applying a few drops of facial oil, use gentle strokes from the centre of your face outward, angling the tool slightly to hug your skin. Focus on areas like your jawline, cheeks, and forehead, and enjoy the relaxing, de-puffing effects as you go. With regular use, gua sha can help to increase circulation, reduce tension, and create a healthy-looking glow. - Using a Facial Roller
Facial rollers are a fantastic tool to boost circulation and massage your face without the need for additional oils, though you’re welcome to add them if you like! Start by rolling from the centre of your face outward, using the smaller end around the eyes and nose, and the larger end for broader areas like the cheeks and forehead. Rollers are especially helpful for depuffing and stimulating lymphatic drainage, providing a quick pick-me-up when your skin needs it.
How to Decide: Which Tool is Right for You?
The right tool depends on your skincare goals and personal preference. If you’re looking for a targeted approach with a deeper massage, a gua sha tool like our jade gua sha mushroom or rose quartz gua sha might be perfect for you. If you enjoy a more effortless, daily routine, a roller can be ideal for quick use and is excellent for depuffing and refreshing the skin. Our jade gua sha comb works on both the face & scalp, treating both to a complete relaxation experience.
As with all skincare practices, consistency is key! Whether you choose a gua sha tool, a facial roller, or a combination, regular use can help reveal healthier-looking skin over time.
