Moroccan Hammam Facial Treatment
Our take on the centuries-old invigorating ritual that most Moroccans partake in weekly at their local Hammam Spa.
First of all make up your Rhassoul paste. Add one flat bamboo spoon of Rhassoul into your bowl, gently agitate to flatten the surface of clay powder. Add 1.5 spoons of water, filtered is best, covering the powder. Leave to activate for around 5 minutes. Once activated you should have the consistency of a thick mousse.
If possible steam the face first, for example over a bowl of steaming water, to prepare the skin.
Cleanse the Skin with Argan Oil & Rose
In a Hammam you would get washed & scrubbed with Olive oil soap & Kessa glove; here we use Argan Oil with Rose to cleanse and an Organic Hemp Cloth to exfoliate.
Directions: Pipette around 8 drops of oil into your hand, massage hands together and gently massage your face to break down make up dirt and grime.
Wash hands then whilst wet massage fingers gently on skin to begin to emulsify the oils.
In hand-hot water soak then wring out the face cloth and gently massage the oil off the skin. Repeat that step another time if necessary to remove the oil.
Gently pay skin dry with a clean towel.
Your clay paste should now be activated, use your bamboo brush to apply a thick layer to your face. It will feel cooling and refreshing. Sit back and relax. If you have sensitive skin leave no longer than 5 minutes. Oily / problem skin leave up to 15mins. Mask can be kept moist by draping the face cloth (soaked in hand-hot water then gently wrung) over the face. Like with any clay mask – do not allow it to dry hard! There are 3 phases of a clay mask:
1) The wet phase where the skin absorbs the essential minerals contained in the clay,
2) The cool phase where the skin’s blood flow is stimulated as the clay begins to contract and draw toxins out of the skin through ionic exchange, and
3) The dry phase where it feels hard & dry, here it will start to dry the skin out.
When it feels sticky but beginning to dry (end of phase 2), remove the clay mask using warm water & your face cloth, massaging the skin gently to polish & exfoliate. Wash any surface splashes away whilst clay is still wet. It is normal if your skin looks a little flushed as the clay has increased your circulation.
Follow with 2-3 drops of the Argan & Rose Oil to seal in the benefits of the mask and impart further nutrients.
Your skin will be clean, exfoliated, replenished and nourished.
The above treatment can take up to around 30 minutes so set aside some important pampering time and enjoy. Below are suggestions for quicker uses of your Rhassoul clay set.
Rhassoul Facial Scrub
Apply activated clay paste with brush or fingers. Gently massage the clay to exoliate the skin, sloughing off dead skin cells & drawing toxins out with the clay’s negative charge. Remove with warm water. Follow with the Argan & Rose oil to seal in the benefits.
Rhassoul Shower wash
Wet skin then massage clay paste all over. For added nourishment & exfoliation add 2 drops of the Argan & Rose oil to the paste and massage body with a wash cloth. Rinse thoroughly. Skin will be soft & clean.
Rhassoul Hair Wash / Mask
All hair types. Make a thinner paste compared to the above suggestions by using 4 spoons of water for 2 spoons of clay powder. Allow to activate, mix into a runny paste. Wet hair & pour paste over scalp. Massage in, leave for up to 5 minutes (do not allow to dry), comb clay through to ends of hair before rinsing thoroughly. The clay will absorb dirt & oils from hair whilst replenishing it with minerals leaving it silky clean & refreshed. Add a few drops of Argan & Rose Oil for a perfumed hair mask with extra nourishment.
Apply a dab of activated clay paste to a pimple to draw out the toxins and aid healing.
Use a floral water (hydrosol) instead of plain water when making clay paste. Rose, Chamomile or Lavender would all work well.
Add a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar to lower the pH and help with acne-prone skin.
Make a cup of very diluted Apple Cider Vinegar in water and rinse the hair with it after shampooing with Rhassoul clay paste. This should add an extra shine to hair.
