History of Lavender Use
Due to a lack of written evidence before Egyptian times it is in Ancient Egypt that we start, although it can be safely assumed that lavender was used for thousands of years before that. In Egypt it was utilised by the elites and priests in cosmetics such as massage oils, medicines, and embalming. This knowledge spread to Greece where it was used in perfumes and medicines, and then to Rome where people bathed in it and it is thought the word Lavender arose from the latin lavere- to wash.
At every point of modern history evidence can be found of the importance lavender had to the culture, it truly is the most amazing plant and essential oil, and we recommend everyone have some in their lives!
The birth of modern aromatherapy can be attributed to Lavender. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist and scholar living in the early 1900s, burnt his hand and plunged it into the nearest vessel of liquid he could see- it was Lavender Oil, and he was impressed by how quickly the burn healed without infection or scarring. Gattefosse is credited with coming up with the name “aromatherapy”.
Lavender Oil has been used in the home for centuries in DIY cleaning products, room perfumes & natural medicinal remedies.
