Hemp History
Hemp is said to be one of the first cultivated plants on the planet. Hemp seeds have been used in medicine and for nutrition for thousands of years, and the plants for fibres & fabrics. Due to the growth of synthetic fibre use and the banning of hemp plant growing at the beginning of the 20th century production plummeted. Fortunately it is now growing again, as laws are relaxing around the plant’s growth, and demand for natural products over synthetic is on the increase.

Archaeologists have discovered hemp fabric in China that is more than 10,000 years old. The earliest known woven fabric was apparently of hemp, which began to be worked in the eighth millennium (8,000-7,000 BC). From more than 1,000 years before the time of Christ until 1883 AD, cannabis hemp – indeed, marijuana–was our planet’s largest agricultural crop and most important industry, involving thousands of products and enterprises; producing the overall majority of Earth’s fiber, fabric, lighting oil, paper, incense, and medicines. In addition, it was a primary source of essential food oil and protein for humans and animals. Ninety percent of all ships’ sails (since before the Phoenicians, from at least the 5th Century BC until long after the invention and commercialization of steam ships–mid- to late-19th century) were made from hemp.
Hemp Oil for Skin
Hemp Seed Oil has been called “Nature’s most perfectly balanced oil” because it has the ideal ratio of 3:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) – compounds we require to strive but cannot produce ourselves. It contains up to 80% polyunsaturated fatty acids, one of the highest of any oils; this gives it its outstanding emollient properties as well as helping skin to remain moisturised & healthy at the cellular level. It also contains a small amount of other beneficial fatty acids Gamma Linolenic Acid and Oleic acid, making it a truly unique oil. The seeds are second only to the soybean for their protein content, they contain all of the essential amino acids. It contains ceramides, which along with EFAs make up the skin barrier and without them skin would be dry & damaged. Applying these nutrients topically to skin replenishes them promoting a healthy skin barrier function.
It has a comedogenic rating of 0 which means it won’t clog pores and will absorb well.
Hemp seed oil suits all skin types – it nourishes dry skin, keeps the pores clear for oily skin types, and replenishes essential nutrients to reduce the signs of ageing and help keep skin in optimum condition. Its high antioxidant Vitamin E content counteracts free radical damage at the skin’s surface in turn protecting skin cells. Its EFA content is anti-inflammatory and improves skin’s elasticity leaving it soft & radiant.
The EFA’s in Hemp seed oil have been clinically proven to remedy dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and acne.
