Plant Description

The Baobab tree is probably the most recognisable tree of Africa, some say iconic, with its big trunk (sometimes up to 25m in circumference!) and branches that resemble roots so that it is also known as the Upside-Down tree. Baobab trees are grand old men of the tree world, some living to 3000 years old.

The oil is pressed from seeds found in its egg-shaped fruit. Surrounding the seeds is a tangy and tasty pulp which can be eaten or mixed into a drink and is rich in Vitamin C.

Baobab History

As well as the fruit, the flowers leaves and bark of the Baobab Tree have also been used for folk medicines, to reduce fevers, heal wounds and cure disease.

There are many legends of the Baobab Tree, many related to its upside-down appearance; the great spirits grew tired of it complaining of how it wanted to be the brightest and best tree of Africa, so they plucked the tree out of the ground and put it back upside down. This is to explain its appearance and the fact that it is leafless for the majority of the year – it’s in shock!
